Lobby Signs | Spotlight on Honeywell

lobby signsNew Lobby Signs

Honeywell International bought out Sperian Safety Products which required the latter to need new signs: specifically lobbys signs.  So who did Honeywell turn to when they needed new signs?  Why Sign Clemente of course.  Honeywell’s lobby signs are fairly simple, although they are fairly specific as to their color matching.  For Honeywell’s lobby signs, we went with 1/2″ thick PVC sheeting enameled white.  Then we used acrylic for the letters for their lobby signs.

Add Dimension to Your Lobby Signs

Adding thickness to lobby signs elements adds dimension and makes the the sign more interesting.  A back panel like the one you see in the photo adds the right background color instead of relying on whatever the color of the wall happens to be.  In this case, a clean white background provides the most pop for their lobby signs.  The letters are 3/4″ thick for these lobby signs making the name “Honeywell” prominent.  Because the letters “Safey Products” are smaller, we went with 1/4″ thick letters.  One thing about dimension and lobby signs:  if letters are too thick, they become difficult to read from an angle.

The Right Materials for the Right Lobby Signs

The right materials can mean the difference between great lobby signs and mediocre lobby signs.  We like acrylic because of its durability, its clean edge when cut from a router, and the way enamel paints look.  For lobby signs, we call acrylic the “king of the plastics”.   For the back panel, PVC works well for lobby signs.  Because PVC sheeting is injected with air, it weighs less than other materials, so the entire sign is lighter and the danger of the sign weighing too heavily on the wall is not a factor.   Receptionists often worry about the lobby signs right behind them coming down during an earthquake!

Read a little history about Honeywell….  Interesting how much their products touch our lives.

Shine On Irvine Signs | Spotlight on AbregovParrino

Lighted Irvine Sign Shines Above the Rest

AbregovParrino, a CPA and investment management firm in Irvine has a spectacular set of Irvine signs.   We originally created and installed two lobby Irvine signs for them that now greet clients as they enter the firm’s lobby.  Months later, they continued to enhance their marketing efforts by adding a new lighted building sign for their Irvine signs.  Again, the firm turned to Sign Clemente.

A “Reverse” Letter? The Making of Irvine Signs

To be a stand-out amoung Irvine signs, this illuminated sign needed to be extraordinary.  We acheived this by constructing reverse channel letters.  These are letters that are literally made to be turned around.  The letters shine through the back, rather than the front thereby creating the halo effect you see in the photo.  The lighting comes from white LEDs.  LED technology is prooving advantageous to neon, because for Irvine signs, it saves significantly on power and long life.

Irvine Signs Shine Over Irvine

Their Irvine signage shines over Irvine Center Drive right off the 405 Freeway and can be seen both day and night.  The sign is a proud addition to Irvine signs as drivers pass it all day long.  It sells for AbregovParrino 24 hours a day.

In other news…

OK, this is pretty snarky, and maybe offensive to some- but interesting to read about restrictions on Irvine signs.

Corporate Image in Your Lobby

Lobby Signs and Your Corporate Image

Building signs and monument signs provide that all-important first impression, but lobby signs help cement your corporate image in your customers’ mind. (see our other blogs on the subject.) Unlike other kinds of signs, your lobby surrounds your prospective customer and provides a 360 degree setting for really setting up a positive look and feel for your corporate image.

One of our customers, Livetime, really wanted to make sure that their lobby signs established their look and feel. As you see in the picture, they went with beveled acrylic for their first sign, but then decorated their walk way with lobby signs using their brochures. The look with lobby signs turned out to be stunning. These lobby signs will never fail to make a strong and positive impression!

When are Lobby Signs not Lobby Signs? (when they go in a conference room)

Another customer, after buying four lobby signs from Sign Clemente, decided that they wanted to project their corporate values and attributes to their customers and employees. We designed three signs for their conference room, a place where employees and customers would have a chance to gaze on their message. The signs are made of acrylic– we like to use clear acrylic and apply the paint to the backs to give a high-gloss and deep finish. The letters of the lobby signs are also acrylic and painted metallic silver.

What’s With These Lobby Signs?

One of our favorites is from Milan Institute of Cosmetology. We have installed well over a half-dozen lobby signs around the west as they add new campus locations. The humorous part of this pic is the student hairdo in the foreground! These signs are 1″ thick clear acrylic with polished aluminum laminated to the faces. The ‘L’ depicts a hair shaft, and we back painted that letter. Their lobby signs really come off and greet lots of prospective students each day.

To get a slightly different perspective, check out these two other blogs on lobby signs from a couple of our sign friends:

Make Monument Signs Your Landmark

Monument Signs 101

Monument signs, unlike other types of signs, stand on their own. The monument is designed for one purpose, and that is to present the sign. Other types of signs go on walls or use some other type of architectural structure to support them. Monuments signs are stand-alone. You can provide all kinds of design elements to enhance the look of your monument signs, and everything about them points to your message.

The message for monument signs can mark a shopping or office center, with a list of tenants. Otherwise, lots of businesses add monument signs to their wall signs to further enhance their company image. The monument sits closer to the road, so it is often the monument sign you see first.

What’s This About Foam Monument Signs?

A foam monument with flat-cut aluminum letters and landscape lighting.

Sign Clemente likes to make several types of monument signs—our favorite being foam monument signs. Foam? Yes, bead foam, like what a Styrofoam cooler is made of, makes great monument signs. We provide a surprising demonstration where we let customers hit the material with a hammer. The styro never fails to spring back into shape. (see the video below) Foam monuments are economical, especially compared to concrete, are easy to install, and last and look great for years. The material has an epoxy coat and then is finished with acrylic stucco. Foam monument signs can then be enhanced with landscape lighting which up lights the sign at night.

Cabinet Monument Signs

An internally-lit cabinet sign with removable acrylic panels. We added brick work to enhance the aesthetics.

If it is internal lighting you want, monument signs made of aluminum cabinets can do the job. The cabinets have tracks which allow for removable panels which enable you to change the names of tenants on your monument signs. Lighting is ordinarily provided by commercial-grade florescent tubes, which are long-lasting and provide low power consumption and high nighttime visibility on your monument signs.

You often see sand blasted wood signs too. Each panel is removable for new tenants, and makes for a unique presentation of your monument signs. Lighting can really enhance your monument signs presentation either from landscape lights, or direct lighting on the top of the sign.

Monument signs can really be beautified by adding stone work and flowers. Monument signs can really make a powerful and attractive statement, advertising your tenants, your center and your company image.

How is a Building Sign Like a Shave and a Haircut?

First Impressions with Building Signs

Almost by instinct, we all primp in the morning and want to look out best when we are out in public. The reason is because we want to make good first impressions. Building signs provide your first impression for hundreds of pairs of eyes that drive by your company location.

Decisions, Decisions and Building Signs

There are lots of different kinds of building signs. Way back when, lots of building signs were painted on. But with the advent of computer-assisted manufacturing, building signs have become more dimensional, and more interesting.

The first thing Sign Clemente always asks when discussing building signs with customers, is will the building signs be lighted or unlighted?

To Light or Not Light Those Building Signs

Acrylic on foam, with a creative touch to the start.

Unlighted building signs are the more simple. The most common non-lighted building sign is 2 lb. foam with an acrylic face. No one from the ground can see what the letters are made of, so foam offers a long-lasting and economical way to have some great looking building signs. Sign Clemente likes to put a stucco finish on the sides to deter birds who often like to peck.

An even more beautiful option is formed metal letters. We go with aluminum which is light, durable and most important, rust

Formed aluminum enameled letters.

free. Enamel sets up beautifully on these building signs and looks terrific.

In the way of lighted building signs, neon and LED lighting are the two big options. Sign Clemente almost never installs neon building signs these days, although we have installed lots of neon signs all over Orange County.

LEDs and Building Signs

Straight channel letters with acrylic faces. Lots of colors from which to choose.

LED has come down in price drastically, and is so much more economical in terms of power savings and ease installing; it is barely worth going with neon in your building signs. LED’s last hundreds of thousands of hours, and if one or two LEDs go out in your building signs, it is not noticeable because all the other LEDs stay lit. Often if one section of neon goes out, most or all go out.

Halo lighting-- otherwise known as reverse channel letters.

Your other options with lit building signs is which direction you point your lighting. Reverse channel, otherwise known as halo, lighting has become very popular with building signs. Here the light shines out the back of the letter (hence “reverse channel”) and surrounds your letter with a bath of light. It’s a striking look. Straight channel letters as building signs are letters that shine through acrylic faces with many colors available. And there is a third option with lighted building signs, and that is you can do both!

So there is a choice for every budget and architectural requirement when it comes to building signs. What should drive your decision is the look you are after, your budget and the requirements of your property’s sign plan. Be sure to contact Sign Clemente and we can help you every step of the way with all your signs, including of course, building signs.

What is Your Most Important Resource?

Building Signs and the Air We Breathe

Two-layer acrylic on foam in Irvine

What? Back in my corporate days, a CEO would often make drafty speeches and include that the company’s employees were its most important resource. This never failed to make us all feel good, but the clear fact is that the statement is wrong. Employees are not a company’s most important resource—although critical—customers are. Without customers, employees are irrelevant. And so are building signs.

So Why Building Signs?

So what does this have to do with building signs? Well, with customers being so important, making that great first, second and third impression is equally important. Building Signs are your company’s all-important suit and a haircut. Simply stated, building signs can make you look good. And that is where Sign Clemente comes in.

Building signs show off your brand, your image and make you easy to find. Study after study demonstrates that building signs are the best marketing investment you can make (See Signs You Can’t Afford). Building signs will pull in more revenue, and cost much less per exposure than print media, radio or T.V.

What Kind of Building Signs?

There are two primaries ways to go when planning your building signs: lighted building signs, and unlighted building signs. Unlighted bulding signs are normally made of bead foam, like your Styrofoam cooler. We make them about 2” or 3” thick to provide some dimension and add an acrylic enameled face to preserve color. Birds often like to peck at bead foam, so we like adding a stucco-like finish to deter them from your building signs.

Lighted signs are aluminum formed letters, often called channel

Channel letters in San Clemente

letters. Sheet metal was the popular metal for these building signs, but we switched to aluminum years ago to prevent rust. We recently switched from using neon to LED lit buildings signs. LEDs have come down in price and now are about the same cost as neon, especially when the cost of installation—LED powered channel letters are much easier to install—is factored in. Further, LEDs consume much less power. Using channel letters for your building signs will turn your building into a landmark!

Which ever way you are considering for your building signs, Sign Clemente can help provide all the information you need, create an eye-catching design, and make great-looking building signs a reality.

Lobby Signs in Laguna Niguel

Favorite Signs in Laguna Niguel

Because Laguna Niguel is more residential than commercial, we at Sign Clemente do not get as many opportunities for signs in Laguna Niguel as we would like.

Of our favorite signs in Laguna Niguel, though, are the lobby signs we are doing for Homestead Escrow. This customer is growing like crazy, and so is adding to the sum total of signs in Laguna Niguel. We started by doing one lobby sign for them, and they have liked it so much they have ordered three more!

Make Those Signs in Laguna Niguel Pop

They really wanted their signs in Laguna Niguel to pop—so we added a little extra. Their lobby signs in Laguna Niguel are two layers (see pic) where most signs in Laguna Niguel are one. This extra layer not only adds more color, but it adds more dimension as well to their signs in Laguna Niguel.

Because we didn’t want the sign to be too glossy, and to bring the cost down, we used PVC for their signs in Laguna Niguel. They are flat cut on a computer-driven router table, and then enameled with a thick industrial-quality enamel. Plus, gold and black look really good together for signs in Laguna Niguel.

Going “Crazy” Over Their Signs in Laguna Niguel

One of our favorite quotes is from the president and founder of Homestead Escrow, “Everybody is going crazy over this sign!”

Whimsical Signs in San Clemente

Sign Clemente has been making signs in San Clemente for nearly seven years now. That time has enabled us to make some unusual and creative signs in San Clemente.

A Little More Color in Signs in San Clemente

Being a beach community, San Clemente taste seems to run to less corporate and more colorful signs in San Clemente. Graphics tend to be more upbeat, more creative and more cheerful. That is why we love signs in San Clemente!

One example is the Bartlett Building on the corner of El Camino and Del Mar. The new owner put down a considerable investment in restoring the building. Therefore the signs needed to be complimentary to the 30’s Art Deco style of the building. The signs in San Clemente had to be creative. For the directional signs, we put down a patina and used a 30’s style font. For the building sign, we sandblasted cedar, and hand –painted the graphics. The result was a set of truly appealing and unique signs in San Clemente.

More Signs in San Clemente

Our other signs in San Clemente have often been produced by putting down digital prints on foam panels. Then we cut other pieces of foam to emphasize certain parts of the sign. Take a look at Beach Kids. The hands seemed particularly dominant to us, so we hand cut the fingers and hands to add dimension. The visual effect created a bright, inviting sign among signs in San Clemente.

One of Our Early Signs in San Clemente

Paws Pet Resort was the result of the same approach to signs in San Clemente. We built up the letters to give the name some pop. Both signs in San Clemente provide a sense of whimsy.

Pet Treasure was one of our early efforts and it still shines on Los Mares. It is constructed like a standard lighted cabinet, but that is the only thing about it that is standardbecause we made it shaped like a dog bone. It too is one of our more interesting and fun signs in San Clemente.

And What About ADA Signs?

Choosing ADA Signs Need Not Be A Daunting Task

ADA signs can be attractive as well as functional.

In a world with lots of rules and regulations to keep ahead of, Sign Clemente makes it easy to stay in compliance with ADA signs.

If anything, the regulatory environment is getting more stringent, not less. So it is important to remember ADA signs for office and plant. Rule of thumb: where ever you have rooms that are commonly accessed, you should have an ADA-compliant sign. Such rooms would typically be entry ways, restrooms, lunch or break rooms, meeting rooms and so on. ADA signs in stairwells, especially marking escape routes, are especially important when considering ADA signs.

Regulations and ADA Signs

The list of rules for ADA signs can be daunting. Height of sign placement, letter size, letter style, Braille or Braille II, colors—all these factors are important for ADA signs. Sign Clemente is here to help with all that. The primary factor is how the message is communicated. Tactile letters are the raised letters you see on ADA signs. They are typically 1/16” deep and serve the purpose of communicating to the reading public and to those who are sight impaired. Braille is used for those who are totally without sight and most often used for publically accessed rooms

Some Choices With ADA Signs

ADA signs don’t necessarily need to be expensive as lots of common ADA signs are off the shelf. But more importantly, they don’t need to be boring either. A great deal of design can go into ADA signs and they can be manufactured to be quite attractive.

Lobby Signs: More Credibility and Less Selling?

Livetime goes with beveled and flame-polished acrylic. Digital prints in the background enhange their already impressive image.

Lobby Signs? More than one of our customers have told us that their lobby signs have enabled them to do less selling. What do lobby signs have to do with less selling? Well, they tell us that their lobby signs gave them more credibility. In one case, a graphic artist had to spend less time walking his prospect through his portfolio. In another case, a business coach had to spend less time building credibility with his prospective client.

They attribute that to their lobby signs. What they all tell us is that lobby signs convey their image- it sends an impression to the prospect that says they are here to stay.

Lobby Signs as First Impression Marketing

Painted PVC provides a matte finish. A second back-panel frames the entire sign and really sets it off.

We at Sign Clemente look at lobby signs as first impression marketing. Imagine that you are thinking of hiring a company to do some important work for you. You show up at their company location and what you see is a broken-down building, lots of weeds, and an old beat up sign. What would you do? You would turn around and leave.

But imagine the reverse. You walk into a nicely furnished lobby and you see one or two beautiful lobby signs representing the company’s logo in 3-D. In most cases, any doubts you might have had would start to melt away. Lobby signs say that you pay attention to detail, that you invest in yourself, that you have a sense of permanence. Lobby signs are like nice clothes for your business.

Lots of Choices for Lobby Signs

There are many ways to go with lobby signs, using varieties of materials and finishes. Most customers really like the look of acrylic for their lobby signs. Then again, matte finishes are becoming more popular over gloss, and PVC definitely provides a more subtle look for those lobby signs. Aluminum will also cut the gloss, definitely if one goes with brushed aluminum; you’ll get more of a semi-gloss if those lobby signs are painted with enamel. A great way to give lobby signs more dimension is to stud mount the letters and logo of the lobby signs and peg those elements off the wall with stand offs, usually about one-half inch.

If you have a rather plain wall, a colored back panel adds a nice touch. You can also go with a two-layered back panel to frame your entire lobby signs.

There are definitely lots of ways to go with your lobby signs. Let Sign Clemente help you out. The good news is, no matter which way you go with Sign Clemente, you will always get a great -looking and eye-catching lobby signs.

This lobby sign is made of enamel-coated aluminum. It is pegged off the wall with half-inch stand offs.
