Lighted Signs

lighted signsThere are a number of different types of lighted signs that Orange County businesses can use to great effect. For a discussion on illuminated (or lighted) lobby signs, check out our recent blog post on the topic. It’s also possible to illuminate monument signs. This is a discussion about exterior lighted building signs, which are channel letters. These are hollow metal letters with the lighting placed inside. In the past, these signs were made out of sheet metal, which would rust over time. Today, we only use aluminum when creating these types of signs, so rusting is never a problem.

Lighted Signs Go From Neon to LED

When Sign Clemente first opened nearly ten years ago, we only used neon because LEDs were so expensive, but as LEDs have come down in price considerably over the years we find them to belighted signs superior to neon in many ways. Generally, we only use neon if we do an open-neon style (also called exposed neon), but channel letters are far more common. Not only are the initial purchase prices of LEDs substantially less than they were in the past, they are far more cost efficient than neon in terms of power usage.

There are two kinds of channel letters: standard channel letters, and reverse (or halo) channel letters. With standard letters, the light comes through the faces of the letters. The faces are made of acrylic, and the body of the letters are made of aluminum, with an enamel finsih. Reverse lighted signschannel letters are used when you want the lighting to come out of the back of the letters. To do this, we design signs where the letters actually stand off of the wall by an inch or two,  and are pegged with studs. With these lighted signs, the light comes out the back and reflects off the wall to give a halo effect. These light for these signs is almost always white; very rarely do you see colored lights in signs with reverse channel letters.

The main advantage of lighted signs is that customers see your sign at night, so it’s almost like a beacon. Your site is more of a landmark than just a building with a name on the face, especially in the winter when it’s dark early — people can find you easily, and your business may be a reference place for other businesses.   Any time your space is  mentioned (“Just turn right past the Mighty Donut Depot — you can’t miss it!”), there’s potential for increased business. You always want to belighted signs easy-to-find, and in Orange County, having a lighted sign increases the likelihood that you will. Lighted signs are particularly great for anyone with late-afternoon or evening customers: dentists, doctors, restaurants, etc. can all benefit from having a business that’s easy to see. Plus, an illuminated sign is ongoing advertising. Even when your business is closed, it’s like having someone selling for you and increasing name recognition, 24 hours a day.  It is like a salesperson who never goes home, never gets sick and never takes a break!
